Reading For You

Over the last few years I've found that with a busy life and two young children I have barely had chance to read. Reading is one of my favourite things to do and I have a massive bookcase with hundreds of books that I have had no choice but to buy, yet they sit there gathering dust!

With the struggles of the last year, like many I've realised the importance of looking after your mental health, giving yourself a break and time out from the doom and gloom of the news and reality of an isolating lockdown.

I don't know about you, but I find that the bad thought demons are worse at night, especially when you are laying in bed; depriving you of sleep and therefore setting you up to be exhausted and fretful the next day.

Well I've decided that no matter what time I get to bed, I will pick up a book again and read a few pages until I am reading with just the one eye open. The distraction of the story blocks out the bad thoughts and allows me to wind down. It sounds so simple and obvious but I think many of us have forgotten how this peaceful hobby can be so enjoyable and rewarding. I'm guilty myself of sitting there on my phone scrolling and scrolling with no real purpose and whilst there is plenty of entertaining craziness online, there's plenty of the negative to balance it out, and just before bed is not the time to fall down that rabbit hole!

So let me know in the comments - what are you reading now? If you aren't reading then why not? I have plenty of recommendations if you need one!

  1. Currently reading The Voyeurs Motel by Gay Talese. A non fictional eye opener! Makes my life struggles seem boring!

  2. Just finished Child 44 (much better than the film) and moving onto the second in the trilogy (The Secret Speech). I read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (by Stephen Donaldson) back in the 90's and am thinking about re-reading them again after I finish these. I still have Keith Richard's autobiography to finish too.
